In exploring “urban scars” which appear on our landscape, this investigation is centred on the district of Thanet. It has involved investigating the appearance of “ghost signs”; these are signs, such as, adverts, shop signs etc. which no longer hold their original use or purpose. They create a scar or imprint on the environment and give an impression of the past.
These are two photos of a sign in Grange Road, Ramsgate. One of which was taken recently in 2013, while the other photo dates back to the early 20th Century.
Memories of Grange Road:
"Loving your photos I lived here 1983-1997 it's so sad to watch Ramsgate disintegrate, anyway 1 pic of your signs caught my attention Grange Rd myself and my parents lived in the flat over the shops, it was Walter Maye's general store years ago. the sign was readable when we was there. My parents left in around 2005 and moved over the other side of town, I want to cry as the flat is now derelict and a state. I have a picture of Grange Rd in my hallway of the sign and property and just remember the happy days we had there." Mandy
